holy crap, we're digging this old argument up. It's a soft g, because the creator says so. Acronym pronounciation has nothing to do with the words it represents. Otherwise, any acronym with 'SH' would require them pronounced separately. Think also of the soft C in circuit. Almost always hard in an acronym.
